The High Performance Training Program (HPT) is the highest level of Basketball BC's High Performance Program and is part of Canada Basketball's overall Targeted Athlete Strategy (TAS).

TAS is a national program that provides identified Canadian athletes with the individualized support that they need in their development to enhance what the team-based system already provides.

The HPT program is for athletes entering Grades 10 -12 in the fall (ages 15 -17 by the end of the year).  Athletes are required to try out for the program, but some athletes may receive a direct invitation based on prior identification or evaluation through provincial and national team participation.

GIRLS HPT PROGRAM - Overview

The HPT program’s primary goal is for athletes to maximize their potential and attain the highest level of achievement possible by providing athletes with a training and development program that is individualized and will maximize their growth as a skilled athlete over the long term,  The strategy is based on two fundamental factors of LTAD, periodization and calendar planning, which are used to design a plan for athletes that provides them with the resources they need to ensure they develop holistically as an athlete.

The HPT program’s focus is on skill development, decision making, and playing in the four phases of the game: offense, defense, offensive and defensive transition.

This program, when combined with Provincial Team participation, is viewed as a comprehensive Yearly Training Program (YTP).

HPT is recognized by Canada Basketball as part of its identification process and is recognized by Canada Basketball as the pathway for inclusion in National Team Age Group participation for invitation to National team assessment camps at both the Cadette and Junior National level.

Program Coaches and Trainers are NCCP T2C trained and certified.

Players will be eligible to receive Pacific Sport Carding which includes a Gym works Package.

For 2021, the HPT program is designed for 18U athletes (2004, 2005, 2006) and coincides with the athlete identification process for Basketball BC’s 17U provincial team and the 18U Canada Summer Games team.

GIRLS HPT PROGRAM - Curriculum

The Girls HPT Program curriculum is generated in alignment with current key concepts of play and point of emphasis from Basketball Canada and is formulated through consultation with Basketball B.C. and Basketball Canada staffs to best serve the needs of our elite players. The program is designed for provincially and nationally targeted athletes.

These athletes have been identified through observations, evaluations and consultations from various sources including, Basketball B.C. Staff, Provincial Program Coaches, Basketball Canada Staff, Club and University coaches. This process considers practice, games and overall training and performance data. The selection model is based on Basketball Canada's targeted athlete identification criteria.

The HPT Program, through our Integrated Support team (IST), includes strength, agility and quickness training, functional movement screening, mental training and nutritional workshops, plus additional time focusing on athleticism development. The Basketball BC High Performance Staff assess these athletes to determine their individual areas of need in the following core areas of development:

  • Basketball Skills and Concepts
  • Physical Development
  • Mental/Social/Emotional Development
  • Life Skills

These areas have been highlighted by Basketball Canada as essential in the overall development of the athlete. All Athletes receive a training program that will be helpful in targeting those areas.

“Basketball B.C.’s TAS program provides exceptional training and support services in all aspects of an athlete’s development including basketball, physical, mental, and social/emotional.

Their technical and coaching staff, and sport science and sport medicine staff, are world class and use training practices which are fully aligned and integrated with our Canadian women’s high performance program so that NextGen athletes from British Columbia who are tracking along the Podium Pathway are well prepared for the rigors of being a high performance athlete in women’s basketball.”

Denise Dignard
Canada Basketball Director of Women’s High Performance

“The integration and alignment between Canada Basketball and Basketball BC has been key in allowing players from BC to perform at their highest when representing Canada on the international stage. It has also allowed more players to make these teams. Basketball BC’s TAS program mirrors what is being done with Canada Basketball’s age group programming (cadet and junior teams).

They have an integrated support team (IST) that includes strength and conditioning, prehab and rehab, mental training, and nutrition. In the basketball pillar the alignment of the coaching staff to the terminology, skill, concepts, decision making and individual performance plans (IPP’s) of Canada Basketball makes it a player centred model. Basketball BC and Canada Basketball are committed to developing players and NCCP trained coaches who are transformational rather than transactional.”

Mike MacKay
Canada Basketball Performance Manager, Women's High Performance
