The major component of Jamboree is the selection of players to the Provincial Team Selection Camp that follows and ultimately to the Provincial Teams.  Basketball BC Elite Committees’ have developed the attached Player Selection Criteria that must be followed during the selection process. This criteria offers an equitable and fair opportunity to all participants attempting to become a member of a Provincial Team.

In the case of U14 and U15 Provincial Team Selections, each player should be taken aside and asked whether they wished to be evaluated for selection to both the Blue and Red teams. This will negate the need to invite replacement athletes to play on teams after the camp is over because players have declined.

• The Selection Committee Chairperson will direct each meeting. 
• There must be list of the players at each meeting.
• A minimum of 18, and a maximum of 50 players, may be invited to the Selection Camp.
• A record of the comments made regarding each player must be kept cumulatively.
• Each player is graded on their performance after each session of the camp, and is given one of three designations:
• a (+) indicating positive performance (this group would be moving on to the PTC;
• an (O) indicating neutral performance (this group is not moving on to the PTC but is being considered);
• a (-) indicating performance poor performance (this group would not move on to the PTC).
• After the each session players may be moved from one category to another but can only be moved one position at a time i.e.
• A player can move from (-) to (O), from (O) to (+), from (+) to (O), and from (O) to (-);
• A player cannot move two groups i.e. from (-) to (+) or from (+) to (-).

• Another method of assessing players is to compare them by position and rank them in descending order based on their comparative performance.

• The Selection Committee is made up of either 2 non coaching members and the Head Coach of the Provincial team or 3 non coaching members and the Head and Assistant Coaches of the Provincial Team and each selection committee members receives a single vote.
• The exceptions include the following:
• Apprentice coaches may have oral input in the selection process but may not vote for players;
• Coaches may not comment on their son/daughter, if they attend the camp, or on a player that attends the school the coach teaches at.

All participants must be informed whether they were successful in being selected to a Provincial Team by the end of the camp and asked to commit to play for that team.

• The committee and coaching staff must collectively inform the players individually before the end of the camp by dividing the participating players into groups and having the camp coaches inform them, in confidence, of their status in moving forward. The coaches will all be assigned players that will and will not be invited to move on in their groups.

• Reading the names of the players that are chosen for the provincial teams out loud, is not part of that policy.

• Players will be invited to ask coaches for feedback, which has always been the case at these camps and coaches will continue to provide encouragement and an honest assessment of the player’s skills at that time

• A short meeting should be held at the completion of the camp with the invitees where all participants should be informed of the location, date and times of the camp.
